Bertie Pennie

Artist

Bertie (Robert) Pennie was born in 1955 in County Antrim – the heartland of the Ulster Road Racing – and went to his first motorcycle race (the Mid-Antrim 150) at the age of 5. He now lives in Rathkenny on the outskirts of Ballymena and paints from his purpose built studio at home.
Bertie studied art under Frank Shepherd, whose style of teaching has had a lasting effect on his work. Having attained a Grade A in A level Art and Design he went on to study Graphic Design at the Belfast College of Art and Design.

After Leaving College he worked as a freelance designer and has worked on several graphic design projects for BBC NI Sport on both local and National TV. As a life-long motorcyclist and regular race goer to the local circuits it’s no surprise that the main theme of his work now comes from within the motor sport fraternity.
